I've been working from home (bank hours literally) for over 2 years now and the few keys to success for me are:

(1) Exercise in the morning. Getting out of bed and going straight to the computer sucks and is really inefficient. Get the heart rate pumping, go outside, run a few miles, or walk a few miles to a coffee shop, not just to the one around the corner. If you have someone special in your life, conduct your outside morning exercise together. It will rejuvenate both of you and give you that extra 1/2 an hour in the morning to talk and spend time with eachother.

(2) If you are able to have a second computer or your job provides one, keep one for work and one for home. When the end of the work day is up, turn off the work computer and only use your personal computer for personal things. Don't use your work computer for anything personal. Keep the two separate.

(3) It's really hard to leave the desk for lunch. In fact, it's quite rare. I don't care about eating lunch at my desk but sometimes I really do need a mental break away from a computer screen. I'll go spend an hour on the XBOX, reading or catching up on magazines we've subscribed to, or just sit on the couch and give myself a rest. The worst thing about working in an office environment is not being able to take a cat nap once in a blue moon.

(4) Leave your PDA on mute until the afternoon. It's actually very easy to forget about if your personal emails aren't chiming away and you'll be surprised by how undestracted you were.

Great article! When I work from home I make sure I don't have any other distractions around. That means no browser windows open to websites I don't need and no TV background noise. I agree with those who commented that it's important to take walks, either as a break or at the end of the day...it helps a lot!

Currently, I am studying for my master's degree exit exam as well as working (part-time) from home. I treat Monday-Friday like a regular workweek. I have one of those open/closed signs (with the little clock) on my home office door. At 5pm, I close up shop and move the little red hands on the sign to "Back at 8:30." It's a whimsical way of keeping me disciplined about my work/life balance.

I always like to keep my workspace clean. Working in a clutter free environment helps me work more efficiently and think with a clear mind! Also, having a proper working space puts you in a professional mindset and you’re a lot less likely to get distracted :)

the hardest part about having a home office is calling it a day and not having the fun of actually going home. even if i take a walk to the post office, it makes me feel more energized and accomplished regardless of how many productive hours i've already spent behind the computer.

one thing I've def learned is really key to my productivity is getting up, showering right away and dressing WELL, even just for the home office. working in pjs sounds exciting but it isn't glamorous when FedEx shows up and you are wearing sock monkey flannel bottoms, your old college hoodie, ugg slippers and of course it is 6pm.

I definitely agree that getting out of the house is important. I've noticed that as I am working from home for longer periods of time, not only does my productivity tend to suffer, but my mood does as well. Getting out and going to coffee shops or co-working spaces every once in a while prevents this from happening and rejuvenates my motivation!

While I love working at home, leaving home to work somewhere else in the morning can have great benefits. There's something about being forced to get out of bed and drive somewhere that helps break you out of a sluggish early morning.

Since Barnes & Noble brought back free wi-fi, it's a great resource for me.

1.) There are plenty of business and how to books around when you get stumped on a particular subject or task.

2.) It is a store so chatter is expected and if the noise affects you, you can bring headphones to play classical music (studies have proven this increases productivity)

3.) I love their Harney & Sons Tea. The hot cinnamon is my favorite. I even buy the tin cans to drink it at home.
